LINCOLN — Machaela Cavanaugh, daughter of former U.S. Rep. John Cavanaugh, is launching a bid for the Nebraska Legislature today.

She will be seeking the District 6 seat now held by State Sen. Joni Craighead of Omaha. The district covers central and west-central parts of Omaha.

Cavanaugh works at the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska. Previous jobs included working as director of development for Opera Omaha and the American Province of the Servants of Mary and as a staff assistant for former U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb.

Cavanaugh is a registered Democrat. The Legislature is nonpartisan, meaning candidates run and serve without regard to party labels.
