Democrat Mike Hughes runs for Douglas County sheriff

“Mike Hughes, an Army veteran and former police officer who works with underprivileged students in Omaha, will run for Douglas County sheriff in 2018.

Hughes, a Democrat, announced this week that he will seek the seat that Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning, a Republican, has held since 1994.

Hughes, who grew up in Omaha, earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master’s degree from Columbia Southern University.

He served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Afghanistan.

Hughes worked as an officer in the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department in Georgia from 2013 until resigning in 2016 to move back to Omaha. He and his wife have two children.”
