Defrauded foster children & Nebraskans

From Senator Machaela Cavanaugh –

Friend —

Last week, I sent a letter to our state Attorney General Doug Peterson requesting he launch an investigation into whether Saint Francis Ministries defrauded the state.

St. Francis Ministries is a Salina-based foster care provider whose leadership has been accused of misusing $10 million of company funds on a lavish lifestyle.

This raises serious questions about whether Nebraska taxpayers have been defrauded and should be repaid. And I am incensed that the dollars in question should have gone to providing services for children — many of whom have experienced abuse and neglect — who are navigating the painful foster care system.

We have an obligation to provide a home for the children in our foster care system, and we have a fiduciary duty to make the best use of taxpayer dollars. In this instance we did neither. It’s time to take steps toward rectifying those mistakes.

I have formally requested the Attorney General’s office file a motion to preserve any evidence relating to the contract with Nebraska and request an investigation into these matters.

Thank you, Machaela Cavanaugh
